Posture expert reveals the 'only two positions' you should be sleeping in

By Madhurima Haque|

Stomach sleepers, look away! Posture expert James Leinhardt has shared the "only two sleeping positions [he would] ever recommend."

In a clip shared on TikTok, Leinhardt, who founded the foam pillow and mattress brand Levitex, said one of the best positions to sleep in is "The Soldier" i.e. lying straight on your back.

"If you're lying on your back, your spine is immediately supported by the mattress, and you've got the most even distribution of body weight," he explained.

"If you pop a pillow underneath your knees, you'll find that you slightly tilt your pelvis and more of your back is now touching the bed. It's better supported."

The second is "The Dreamer" i.e. sleeping on your side. This is the only other position that allows your spine to stay straight as you sleep, as Leinhardt demonstrates.

"Clinical evidence dictates that you put the least amount of tension through your spine in the sideline position," he said.

"You want your ears, your shoulders, your hips, your knees, [and] your ankles all stacked on top of each other.

"If you pop a pillow between your knees and ankles, then you're gonna de-weight that top leg and keep it better supported."

He told his 648,200 followers that these are the only two positions people should sleep in, "unless you have some sort of clinical reason for lying on your stomach, which is very rare.'"

The commenters, however, begged to differ.

"I have a clinical reason, it's called only-comfy-on-stomach-itis," one joked.

"I ALWAYS have sleeping paralysis when I sleep on my back," shared another, "I only sleep on one side because of that."

"I always start out in either of these position. Never wake up how I start," another shared.

"There are too many rules, you cannot now invade my sleep too!" another adamantly said.
