Sleep doctor's advice on why you shouldn't be sleeping for more than nine hours

By Nadia Scurria|

Sleeping is one of the most important things our bodies need to rest, recover and regenerate but how much sleep are we supposed to get?

Now depending on your age, everyone's sleep requirement is different but it also depends on the quality of sleep you should be getting.

According to Dr Michael Breus, also known as @thesleepdoctor, there is such a thing as getting too much sleep.

It's recommended those aged from ages 18-64 years old aim for around seven to nine hours a night. If you're over the age of 65 it's seven to eight hours.

But sleeping any longer than that, might not always be beneficial for us, as it like means your sleep quality is compromised, Breus explains.

If you're sleeping too much it might actually be due to an underlying problem.

"It could be a sign of something interesting," he says. "Could they have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea?"

Looking at different sleep disorders, Breus says there could be a few different reasons as to why someone may say they need nine and a half to 10 hours of sleep.

Doctors may consider narcolepsy – a condition in which people are very drowsy during the day, which is mainly caused by a lack of the brain chemical hypocretin, according to NHS.

Another thing that sleep experts tend to look at, according to Breus, is whether or not a person might have depression as a cause to sleeping for extended periods of time.

"Remember, very few people actually require nine to 10 hours of sleep at night so we really want to start to say if that's how much you're sleeping, there could be something else going on," he says.
